Main Street and Magnolia Avenue
Streetscape Improvement Project

On December 18, 2007, the City Council awarded a contract to Scheidel Contracting & Engineering, Inc. for the Main Street and Magnolia Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project, which includes Main Street between Orange Avenue and Ballantyne Street; and Magnolia Avenue between Madison and Lexington Avenue.  The improvements included, but are not limited to: way-finding signage, benches, container plants, trash receptacles, sidewalk replacement, pavement repairs, crosswalks, storm drainpipes, inlets, cleanouts, pop-outs, shade trees, decorative streetlights, pedestrian lighting, in pavement flashing beacons, and irrigation system.  Work began on Main Street and is expected to end November 2008 on Magnolia Avenue.

To celebrate the work done on Main Street a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place on August 6, 2008, preceding the Cajon Classic Cruise Car Show and the National Night Out events.

The eastern side of Magnolia Avenue is also substantially completed, while other crews begin to prep the western side of the street.  To avoid delays caused by the construction crews and equipment, the public is asked to take alternate routes whenever possible during the busy hours of the day. Again, this portion of the project should be near completion by mid-November 2008.

The project is designed to provide for a safer, more vibrant downtown where people can live, work, and play.  It will also establish a new standard that demonstrates the City’s commitment to the needs of current and future investors, businesses, property owners, and developers.

Funding for this project is provided by the City of El Cajon Redevelopment Agency (ECRA), with no City General funds being used. The estimated cost for this project is $4,500,000.  For additional information on ECRA, please visit the City’s website at www.ci.el-cajon.ca.us/dept/redev/housing/index.aspx
