Main Street and Magnolia Avenue
Streetscape Improvement Project

On December 18, 2007, the City Council awarded a contract to Scheidel Contracting & Engineering, Inc. for the Main Street and Magnolia Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project, which includes Main Street between Orange Avenue and Ballantyne Street; and Magnolia Avenue between Madison and Lexington Avenue.  The improvements included, but are not limited to: way-finding signage, benches, container plants, trash receptacles, sidewalk replacement, pavement repairs, crosswalks, storm drainpipes, inlets, cleanouts, pop-outs, shade trees, decorative streetlights, pedestrian lighting, in pavement flashing beacons, and irrigation system.  Work began on Main Street and is expected to end November 2008 on Magnolia Avenue.

To celebrate the work done on Main Street a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place on August 6, 2008, preceding the Cajon Classic Cruise Car Show and the National Night Out events.

In February of 2008, construction began on the Main Street and Magnolia Avenue Corridor Improvement Project. I’m proud to announce that after ten months of construction that this project is now complete. The project was designed to provide for a safer, more vibrant downtown where people can live, work, and play.  It will also establish a new standard that demonstrates the City’s commitment to the needs of current and future investors, businesses, property owners, and developers. Improvements included the installation of a new storm drain system that corrected major drainage issues in the core downtown area, replacement of 97,000 square feet of: deteriorating sidewalks, installation of; two traffic signals (East Main Street & Magnolia Avenue and East Main Street & Sulzfeld Way), 65 ornamental street lights,  105 trees with grates, 34 benches, and 17 trash cans.  Concrete Crosswalks were also constructed at eleven intersections and all sidewalks and curb ramps were brought up to current ADA standards.  Scheidel Contracting and Engineering, Inc. of San Diego constructed this project.  An important fact to remember regarding these improvements is that no funding came from the City’s General Fund.  The City of El Cajon Redevelopment Agency (ECRA), Wastewater Funds, and several business property owners abutting the project provided funding for this project.

The project is designed to provide for a safer, more vibrant downtown where people can live, work, and play.  It will also establish a new standard that demonstrates the City’s commitment to the needs of current and future investors, businesses, property owners, and developers.

Funding for this project is provided by the City of El Cajon Redevelopment Agency (ECRA), with no City General funds being used. The estimated cost for this project is $5,900,000.  For additional information on ECRA, please visit the City’s website at www.ci.el-cajon.ca.us/dept/redev/housing/index.aspx
